Event information:
Lying on the roofs of Gangoji Temple's Gokuraku-do Hall and Zen Room are the tiles from the Asuka period which have continued even until now to offer protection through 1,400 years of harsh weather and winds. Through just the kneading of clay and consequent firing, tiles can be made as a roofing material lasting for more than 1,000 years. This exhibition shines the spotlight on these ancient tiles with incredible longevity, showing you their creation, the way they are lain on roofs, and also allows you to look at tiles from the vantage point of architecture through full-scale roof models, roofing tools, and imagery.
You can also get a glimpse of the powerful decorative shibi ornaments, as well as the elaborately shaped onigawara ridge-end tiles and eave-end tiles at eye level, where they would otherwise be difficult to view on roofs. Don't miss this chance to see the techniques and passion put into tiles by the craftsmen who make them.
