The Traveling Marquis Tokugawa Yoshichika
Yoshichika, the 19th head of the Owari Tokugawa family and founder of the Tokugawa Art Museum and the Hōsa Library, was a man overflowing with intellectual curiosity. Interested in a wide range of fields, he collected works that, through his distinctive perspective, were tied to the memories of their regions and ways of life, including artworks acquired during travels in Southeast Asia and Europe and local folk toys from across Japan. This exhibition traces Yoshichika’s gaze toward culture and the path he left behind, as this year marks the 140th anniversary of his birth and the 50th anniversary of his death.
