Discover Washi, "ILLUSION" Koji Shibasaki's Lighting
Koji Shibasaki’s signature Night Face series consists of lamps made by layering and pasting multiple sheets of washi paper, creating a mysterious sense of three-dimensionality through differences in the shadows of transmitted light. When placed in a bright setting, they appear to be white boxes wrapped in washi, but when illuminated, a complex three-dimensional effect like a “trompe l’oeil” emerges; in darker surroundings, the optical illusion becomes even more lifelike and vividly expressive. In this exhibition, along with Shibasaki’s lighting works, research materials that offer deeper insight into washi and papers from around the world will also be on display.
