Yokoyama Art Museum Collection: “Graceful Old Noritake × Noritake”

Exactly 150 years ago, in Meiji 9 (1876), the elder brother, Morimura Ichizaemon (Ichitaro), began a trading business in Ginza, Tokyo, while his younger brother, Toyo, set out for America. It was the launching point that led to the establishment of the trading company Morimura-gumi and to Morimura Brothers, their sales outlet in New York. Over time, the business came to focus increasingly on ceramics and developed into a major enterprise engaged in decoration and porcelain production.

This exhibition introduces, through works in our collection, the elegant world of Noritake—a brand beloved in Europe and America—rooted in the brothers’ innate drive for action and the foresight inspired by the teachings of Fukuzawa Yukichi.
