Saburo Memorial Museum Special Exhibition: “Six Ceramic Artists”
An exhibition by six ceramic artists based in Mino who are forging diverse forms of expression. While inheriting the spirit of Keiji Ito, Hiromi Itabashi creates serene forms; Kentaro Kawabata brings dynamism to porcelain clay and glass; Akio Niisato crafts white porcelain that transmits light; Takuro Kuwata explores the intersection of tradition and pop; and Keita Matsunaga gives form to the transformation of materials. Each, in a distinct way, renews Mino and reveals new horizons for contemporary ceramics.
Furukawa Art Museum and Tamezaburo Memorial Hall
- Sukiya-style architecture and art
Furukawa Art Museum was opened in November 1991 to display art collected over many years by the first curator, Tamezaburo Furukawa (1890-1993). The art was donated with the wish that it would be enjoyed by many people, not just shut away in a private collection.
The collection totals about 2,800 items, with a focus on contemporary Japanese painting. It also includes oil paintings, ceramics, crafts, a 15th century illustrated manuscript, and more. Currently, various educational activities, such as art lectures and workshops, are also available in addition to the exhibition of the collection.
In November 1995, Tamezaburo's private residence was opened up to the public as the Tamezaburo Memorial Hall, in accordance with his wish for it to be a place of relaxation for everyone. Six buildings from the Tamezaburo Memorial Hall built in 1934, including the sukiya-style main building Ishuntei and the garden tea room Chisokuan, were registered as national tangible cultural properties in November 2018. Gaze out at the beautiful Japanese-style garden from inside the adjoining sukiya-style cafe, and enjoy our menu of original and seasonal Japanese sweets with Tamezaburo's secret-to-longevity matcha tea, fragrant coffee, red bean soup (limited seasonal item), and more (for an additional fee).
The memorial hall also puts on various events, including special exhibitions, several times a year, to match the activities at the art museum.
