Boxes for Treasures:Function,Beauty,and Faith
As words such as “tamatebako” and “hakoiri musume” suggest, the box—one of the containers used to store things—has been deeply connected to people’s daily lives, faith, and art from ancient times to the present day. In addition to its practical functions of protecting, organizing, and transporting its contents, through its intricate decoration, symbolic designs, and even the inscriptions written on both the inside and outside of its lid, the box has at times concealed the feelings of its owner within and served as a medium that speaks across time. This exhibition explores the appeal of boxes by focusing on their function and beauty.
