Fish Paradise - Good story included!
Big catch, big catch. because it's an island country.
“Shrugged” and “read mackerel” are often said.
These expressions are due to the fact that Japan is an island nation rich in delicious seafood.
Fresh seafood and seaweed caught in the ocean, clear streams, and lakes have supported Japanese food since ancient times. Above all, during the Edo period, when the economy developed and gourmet culture blossomed, seafood became an even more familiar food for the common people. Selling seafood from before Edo at Uogashi would cost as much as 1,000 ryo a day, and the culture of kabayaki eel, sushi, and dashi that was born at the time firmly grasped people's stomachs. It was also around this time that fishing was sublimated into “play” among the common people. In addition, patterns and hairstyles imitating shapes inspired that vitality were also born, and they colored not only eating habits but also culture and art.
In this exhibition, you will enjoy Edo culture surrounding fish, from bustling fishing grounds and fish markets, local specialties, proverbs (proverbs), and auspicious symbols to even hairstyles, along with works by Utagawa Hiroshige.
