Tokugawa Art Museum Summer Special Exhibition: “Martial Arts: Samurai Athletes”
Samurai in the Edo period acquired martial skills such as wielding the bow and arrow, riding horses, and becoming proficient in the use of swords and spears. Because samurai took part in battles, they devoted themselves to the daily training of these martial arts. After the samurai class disappeared in the modern era, however, martial arts became established as sports aimed at training the mind and body in the military and educational institutions, continuing into the present day. Focusing on arms and armor actually used by the Owari Tokugawa family, a daimyo house, as well as various manuals on different martial arts, this exhibition introduces a wide range of martial traditions.
