Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival
[Evening Festival (Makiwara Ships): Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. (light rain event)]
[Morning Festival (Danjiri Boat): Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 9:10 a.m. (held with little rain)]
The “Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival” is counted as one of Japan's top three river festivals. It boasts a tradition of nearly 600 years as a festival at Tsushima-jinja Shrine, and is said to be the most splendid of the many summer festivals in Japan.
The festival used to be held according to the lunar calendar, but now it is held on the fourth Saturday of July and the day after.
When the lanterns of the Tsushima Gosha firewood boat floating on the Tenno River are lit, the evening festival begins. When the makiwarabune paddles across the Tenno River while playing the Tsushima flute, flickering lanterns are reflected on the surface of the river, further accentuating its beauty, and the drama of light and water reaches its peak.
At the morning festival, six Kurakushu, led by the Ichie Sha, decorate figurines in the shape of a Noh show, and paddle along while playing music. The sight of 10 hokomochi from Ichiesuma jumping into the water with fukohoko, swimming in the river, and running towards the shrine is nothing short of brave.
Also, in Showa 55, the “Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival Kuraku Boat Festival” was designated as an important intangible folk cultural property of the country, and “Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival Kuraku” was designated as a tangible folk cultural property of the prefecture in Showa 59, respectively, and in December 2016, it was registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage as one of the 33 “mountain, hoko, and food stall events.”
