Mass Extinctions—BIG FIVE special exhibit
In the 4 billion years since life was born, life crises have occurred many times on Earth. However, life has evolved in a variety of ways by overcoming crises and repeated new prosperity of groups to replace extinct groups. In other words, mass extinctions can also be viewed as a phenomenon that promoted the prosperity of life.
In this exhibition, we will unravel five mass extinction events (commonly known as the “Big Five”), which were the largest of them, from various evidences left in fossils and rocks, and trace the evolutionary history of “living things.”
Supervised by 10 researchers from the National Museum of Nature and Science who specialize in various types of paleontology, volcanoes, paleoclimates, paleo-oceans, etc., we will approach the mystery of the five mass extinctions from various angles.
