Nagoya’s Higashi Ward has long held a close connection with the former ruling warlords, the Owari Tokugawa clan. Visit the Tokugawa Art Museum, featuring the finest collection of daimyo warlord treasures including swords, armour, weapons, scrolls, and daily life artifacts. The areas around Nagoya’s Shirakabe-cho and Chikara-machi are filled with historical spots. The main streets of the Imaike and Ikeshita areas have a lively and urban atmosphere, but at night the backstreets become a fascinating den of underground culture. Trendy Hoshigaoka is base to many companies and universities. With a high percentage of young people in the area, its dotted with popular dating spots such as the Hoshigaoka Terrace. Nearby is Nagoya’s famous Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden, home to Shabani, touted as the world’s most handsome gorilla, and the dynamic Higashiyama Tower offering a stunning night view.
