Shining in the Dark - Enchanting Beams
When the book comes down, dance Hatsumuru is an enchanting light ―
What comes in the dark of Edo is an enchanting stage of light.
The darkness of the Edo period, when there was no electricity or gas, was just pitch black.
Therefore, “light” has brightly colored the moments (times) of our lives.
People shared their hearts with each other's signs and incense under fantastic candles (candles) and moonlight, were enthusiastic about fireworks spreading in the dark, and believed in the power to cast demons on the flickering red flames and used them as tools of guidance.
The quiet (quiet) space enriched time to face oneself, and nurtured the aesthetic sensibility of Edo culture.
In this exhibition, we will search for the true nature of light that beautifully penetrates the darkness of the Edo period, such as the moon and stars shining at night, torches (torches), bonfires (kagaribi), and mica (twinkling) techniques with beautiful diffuse reflection in the mysterious flickering foxfire, along with works by Utagawa Hiroshige.
Furthermore, we will also introduce works by Kobayashi Kiyochika (Kobayashiki Yochika), which captures the light of the Meiji era when life changes with civilization and enlightenment.
Darkness brings light, and light makes darkness beautiful.
The beginning is a fascinating moment to focus on the light and enjoy the dark night.
What light stole your heart tonight?
